Brand identity and visual work for TheOnlyAndrews.
This entailed creating a logomark, animated intro & outro for their YouTube channel.
This was a great opportunity to showcase my various skillsets, i.e. mathematical, VFX and graphic design in order to create new and innovative concepts.
I detail the methodology behind this design below.
Methodology
Coding combined with graphic design and VFX can allow us to create unique, powerful and high quality pieces in short amounts of time.
I employed some of my coding knowledge in order to automate, what would have been, a laborious task.
In those few seconds of animation a lot of sophisticated animation can be spotted, however this whole project did not take me more than 5-6 hours in total.
Having consolidated the client profile, I established a strong concept and knew exactly what I needed to create.
I started with a brush pack to create the individual tech-esque elements to form the dynamic background.
Rather than exporting and importing each individual element, I instead linked the Photoshop file to After Effects, allowing me to conveniently edit each individual layer.
The next step was to animate these elements to create the dynamic background. I wanted the layers to constantly jump to different locations within the frame to create a tech-esque, digital vibe as seen in many videogames and Hollywood films.
However, animating dozens of layers individually several times throughout the sequence, while maintaining a high quality and natural feel would have taken too much time and effort
So I employed an expression in After Effects which essentially would:
- randomize a new position for each layer
- every desired period of seconds
- within the coordinates of the frame.
Simple!
I adjusted the time periods for some layers as to make them misalign at their intervals with other layers (they looked too robotic changing all at the same time).
This saved me hours upon hours of mundane editing and animating, and probably achieved a far more natural effect than a manual attempt.
I also animated some specific layers linearly to add some order within the chaos.
I exaggerated the computerised vibe by adding glitch effects to the title and logo transitions and aligned these transitions with the bass peaks of the music.
Finally, I animated everything to scale down and disappear at the end of the sequence along with another glitch animation, which almost feels like a computer protocol or as if someone pulled the plug.
Now have another watch of the final result, having seen the processes behind it.
